I have been practicing as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of North Carolina since I moved here in 2007 (and I am Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in my home state of Montana). I earned my undergraduate degrees (psychology, art and education) from the University of Montana and my Master’s degree in Art Therapy from Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon. My background includes working at a variety of clinical settings including residential treatment centers, juvenile shelters, foster care agencies, outpatient settings, comprehensive school and community treatment programs, intensive in-home services, and therapeutic boarding schools.
I have extensive experience in working with families, teens, and children of all ages. I use several different therapeutic approaches depending on the clients’ needs. Often times I incorporate cognitive behavioral approaches to my work, helping clients learn how their thinking affects their relationships and their life situation. I have been recently trained in EMDR and am interested in helping people work through their trauma. My Master’s training was in Art Therapy, which is another approach I use regularly. All art is a form of communication and expression; in the therapeutic setting this can be very effective bringing about self awareness and change. I find it very rewarding to adjust my therapeutic interactions to suit the client’s needs; sometimes a listening ear is all someone needs and other times clients may need much more direction and guidance.
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family and being in the outdoors. I love to travel, hike, camp, fish, arrowhead hunt, read, draw/paint, and study natural health (such as essential oils, ketogenic diet, functional medicine, etc.) Balancing time with my family and my career is important as both roles are so rewarding to me.
