Karen Engelhard is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) with a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from James Madison University. She has worked as a therapist in private practice, in community based mental health services, on a college campus counseling center, and school-based counseling. Karen is dedicated to forming strong therapeutic relationships and welcomes as much of a person’s experience as possible with the ultimate goal of internal growth and well-being.
Karen approaches therapy from an attachment-based framework, with a focus on creating safety and stability while confronting challenges and promoting growth. She uses a variety of therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Psychodynamic Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Play Therapy Techniques, and Expressive Art Techniques, Experiential therapy, and more depending on the needs of the individual. Her hope for therapy is to foster a greater sense of awareness, empowerment, and self-acceptance.
Karen has experience working with children and adolescents with depression, anxiety, conduct, and behavioral issues including Oppositional Defiant Disorder and ADHD, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, and experience of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder. She has also worked with issues surrounding parenting, grief and loss, social skills building, self-harm/self-injurious behaviors, and attachment and identity concerns.
